Leadership Programs – Camp Sweyolakan

On beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene in Idaho

If you love being in the outdoors, then Camp Sweyolakan may just be what you’re looking for!  Apply for a leadership program -- Counselor-in-Training or the Sweyolakan Outdoor Leadership Experience.  Spend quality time discovering the outdoors and gain leadership skills.

A summer at Camp Sweyolakan is far more than going to camp. It’s a way of life for the summer and an opportunity to positively affect kids, and have fun in the process! During the summer, Camp Sweyolakan serves boys and girls in grades 1 through 12 in resident and day camp programs. We are thrilled that you have taken an interest in our leadership programs.

Camp Sweyolakan is a summer resident and day camp located on Lake Coeur d'Alene in its 87th season. Owned and operated by the Camp Fire USA Inland Northwest Council, camp occupies 300 wooded acres bordered by sandy beaches and rock outcroppings. Campers enjoy a chartered boat ride to camp. Camp is not accessible by road.

Camper activities include hiking, outdoor cookouts, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, fishing, archery, challenge course, handcrafts, hiking and exploring and much more. The Sweyolakan Outdoor Experience program offers a variety of activities including canoe tripping, horseback riding, rock climbing, whitewater rafting and more.

Campers get our full attention as we help them develop strong character, life skills, and values.  We help kids understand the world around them and how they have an impact on it.  Campers learn to push themselves; they gain confidence, independence, leadership and a positive outlook.  Camp teaches understanding, patience, responsibility and cooperation.  Our primary objective is to PUT THE KIDS FIRST.

Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Grades 11-12

Please read this letter written by a former CIT.  As she says, "you won't regret registering for the CIT Program."

Junior CIT

The Junior CIT summer focuses on leadership skills: communication, teamwork, setting goals and achieving them, decision-making, problem-solving, developing strong relationships with others, developing increased confidence, and conflict resolution. The leadership skills you gain will be used in all parts of life, including home, school, sports, youth groups, work, and community.

Junior CIT (first summer) is a four-week course completed during the last half of the summer season. Following successful completion of the Junior CIT program, participants return the following year as a

Senior CIT.

JR CIT APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APRIL 21st!

Senior CIT

Senior CIT occupies the first four weeks of the summer. Junior CIT (or equivalent) is a prerequisite for this program.  Based on staffing needs, successful graduates of the program may be invited to be an intern for all or part of the remaining camp season.

The focus of the Senior CIT program, in an environment of fun, is to develop skills that will make you a great camp counselor and a competent leader of children in any venue!  Skills will include communicating with children, listening, teaching positive behavior and values, handling and understanding behavior and conflicts in positive ways, leading games and activities, and teaching outdoor skills.  You will also learn about camp operation, the role and duties of camp administrator and staff.  These skills can be used in any career that you might choose for working with children!

CIT Application process:

There is a selection process for new candidates of the CIT program.

  • Junior CIT applicants must complete the Jr. CIT Application. Once accepted into the program, a camp registration is required.
  • Senior CIT’s must complete the Sr. CIT Form.  Senior CITs must also register for camp.
  • Participants of both programs must also submit Youth Reference Forms.

Sweyolakan Outdoor Leadership Experience (Grades 10+)

Our Outdoor Leadership Experience training will concentrate on the following leadership skills:

  • communication
  • small group behavior
  • competence in back country skills
  • planning and action
  • decision-making
  • self-awareness

Learn about what goes into planning a multi-day outdoor trip and leading trips into the wilderness. Take on more responsibility at times and at others be asked to just observe. At the beginning of the session, you will talk one-on-one with a counselor and set goals.  As the session progresses, you and your counselor will review your goal progression and update these goals. At the end of the week, you will receive an extensive evaluation designed to help you continue to grow and improve your skills.

These are the Sweyolakan Outdoor Experience programs offered to campers grades 8 & up.

You’ll leave camp with hundreds of memories, skills for working with peers and children, a sense of accomplishment, and a whole lot of new friends.  Campers gain independence and confidence in themselves. A summer at camp will be an experience you’ll never forget.
